an African Elephant and set off at an easy rolling pace in
search of other wild game; wild elephant, giraffe, buffalo

guides are highly trained experts in the behaviour of
elephants and the wildlife around them. Half day trails are
available both in the morning and afternoon. The elephant back safari trails begin at Thorntree Lodge in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park
which is an attractive lodge overlooking the Zambezi River.
Tea, coffee and cordials are served upon arrival and after a
short introductory talk and safety-briefing guests are
introduced to the elephants and their handlers before
mounting the great animals. The handler and no more than
two guests on each animal then head off through the riverine bush, crossing the river in shallow water to get onto the many islands. Halfway through the ride guests will dismount and interact with the elephants on the ground giving the guides an opportunity to make an interesting and
informative explanation about the African Elephant and their relationship with man. Elephant back safaris in the morning last about 4 hours and end with a full English breakfast
and the opportunity to view a video of each guest's elephant ride. The price includes
transfers, tea, coffee, breakfast and cordial drinks. The afternoon elephant back safaris go
on for about 4 hours with snacks at the end of the day and the opportunity to view a video
of each guest's elephant ride. The price includes transfers, tea, coffee, snacks and cordial
drinks.
VICTORIA FALLS HORSE TRAILS
Enjoy the African bush veldt and the Zambezi River riding along the riverbanks on the back
of a horse. Whether you are an experienced rider or a
novice it is a very pleasant and peaceful way to see
game and enjoy the birds and the ride. Animals are less
disturbed by a person on a horse and it is quite possible
to watch game at very close quarters. Experienced
guides lead these trails and riders are put with friends
or groups of similar riding abilities. There are 5-hour horseback safaris which begin in the morning and include tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks. A full day horseback safari lasts 10 hours and includes a cold lunch with wine, soft drinks and
beer. Guests are picked up from the Royal Livingstone at 08h00 and dropped off there at 13h00 for a halfday
and 18h00 for the full day horseback safari. There is also the option of a 1 ½ hour ride. This pick up time
is flexible, but we recommend either 08h00, or 14h30.

The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is an UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to the
mighty and spectacular Mosi-oa-Tunya — 'The Smoke Which Thunders' — known worldwide as
Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park stretches from the
Songwe Gorge below the falls in a north-west arc along about 20 km of the Zambian river bank. It forms the south-western boundary of the city of Livingstone and has two main
sections: a wildlife park at its north-western end, and the land adjacent to the immense
and awe-inspiring Victoria Falls, which in the rainy season is the world's largest curtain of
falling water. It extends downstream from the falls and to the south-east along the Batoka
Gorges. The Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park boasts five White Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo,
Giraffe, Zebra and various Antelope. Although small by African standards (1600Ha), this
increases the chance of seeing game.Clients are also shown some historic sites such as the Old Drift where the original white
settlers lived before 1904. Although we do not operate this activity ourselves, we are happy
to assist with reservations on your behalf.
RHINO WALKS
These walks take place in either morning or afternoon.
Guests are accompanied by our guide and an armed
scout into the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park where they
have the chance to walk with 5 White Rhino. These
animals are highly endangered and it is a rare chance to
get up close and personal to these
magnificent creatures. After being with the Rhino for
about 2 hours guests enjoy sandwhiches and cakes before transfers back to their hotels and
lodges.
BIRDS OF THE ZAMBEZI WALK
Guests on this 3 hour activity are met by their guide who explains the area and safety
precautions before proceeding on the walk where they will learn about the bird species
they see and learn about many of the nesting and feeding habits of the birds of the area. Water and soft drinks are supplied. This activity moves to diferent areas depending on the
seasonal movement of the birdlife.

Described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ and in more modern terms as ‘the greatest known curtain of falling water’, Victoria Falls are a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.
A path along the edge of the forest provides the visitor who is prepared to brave the tremendous spray with an unparalleled series of views of the Falls. One special vantage point is across the Knife edge bridge, where visitors can have the finest view of the Eastern Cataract and the Main Falls as well as the Boiling Pot where the river turns and heads down the Batoka Gorge. Other vantage points include the Falls bridge and the Lookout Tree which commands a panoramic view across the Main Falls. Different times of the year will provide completely different experiences of the Falls region.
Peak flood season is around March and April and the full power of the falls can be experienced in all its glory. As the floods abate the view of the falls gets better and better through the year, but at its lowest, around November and December the Falls become little rivulets running over the edge and in some places along the 1,7km width no water falls at all.
